DFTD’s Favorite Albums of 2009: Coconut Records’ Davy

While you might remember 2009 as the year of Gaga, celebrity deaths, and the Jersey Shore, you may not want to forget Jason Shwartzman. He single handedly released Coconut Records’ sophomore album, got married, and starred in his very own film noir detective comedy.
In contrast to Nighttiming, Davy has a more polished sound, but a folkier feel. Examples of this can be found in tracks such as Microphone, Wires, and Any Fun, all of which have now topped my most listened to tunes of 2009. And without further ado, I give you Any Fun.

After staying up way past my bed time Thursday night following yet another excruciating episode of Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, I was handsomely rewarded when I stuck around for Carson Daly’s Last Call. He opened the show with a little band called Nico Vega, a HAWT rock trio who describe themselves as, “a modern day saint” and “warrior.” Their self-titled album dropped a couple weeks back and does not disappoint.

If you’re into white noise and the Beach Boys in a lo-fi garage-punk frequency then I have just the album for you. Wavvves (three v’s) by Wavves (two v’s) is what you might call cacophony at first listen, but underneath all that static are rebellious tunes with a hard edge. Nathan Williams, the 22 year old San Diego beach bum behind Wavves, has been compared to bands like No Age and a male verison of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Well with songs like “No Hope Kids”, “So Bored”, and “Weed Demon”, I for one am strangely addicted. But for those who take pleasure in easy beats this album is probably best enjoyed in small doses.
The White Stripes - The Dental Twist
Speaking of throwbacks, anyone remember that ex husband and wife duo from Detroit known as the White Stripes? Yeah, those guys. Well after being MIA for two years, they are back for one spectacular night. Tomorrow evening they will be performing for Conan O’Brien’s final show on Late Night. If you haven’t done so already, now would be a good time to set your DVR’s because if it’s anything like this video, it should be pretty darn good and trippy.
Just a little reminder kids.
Personally, day 36 is my fav, no 17, no 57, gah, they’re all so good.
They Might Be Giants - “New York City”

As someone who both loves and lives in New York City, I felt it appropriate to post a song about…you guessed it, N.Y.C L.U.V. And since this has also been a week of covers, I give you They Might Be Giants’ poppier version of Cub’s “New York City”.
Happy VD everyone.
The Lovely Feathers - “Rod Stewart”

What a busy week it’s been here at Don’t Forget to Dance. If you’re a little danced out friends, I understand, but let today be no exception to the rule. Allow me to share with you one of my all time favorite rock of love songs. No, I’m not talking about Bret Michaels, but the Lovely Feathers. “Rod Stewart,” a fine interpretation of “Da Ya Think I’m Sexy” is a lot like the guy who sung it himself. It’s Energetic, romantic, and incredibly sexy, of course. But please be aware it’s also the kind of song that makes you want to slap the person next to you while bursting into epilectic seizure like dance.
Adron - String Song

While I’m not a huge fan of female vocalists, I have to say there is nothing I dislike about Adrienne McCann, singer, song writer, guitarist, sitarist, harpsichordist, whistler (the list goes on) of Adron. For those of you who once participated in the now inoperative muxtape, you can find her among some twelve artists pushing to bring it back. Adron is the perfect fusion of folk, indie and latin jazz. At times even reminiscent of bossa nova artists like Astrud Gilberto. If that doesn’t sound refreshing, I don’t know what does.
